Yes We Are Students and Teachers

In Alabama, to become a licensee, we are required to prepare by taking a pre-license course and then after passing the course and the licensing exam, we are issued a temporary license. Before we can obtain our permanent license, we have to take and pass a post-license course.

But that's not the end of it, after that, every two years, we must complete continuing education courses in order to renew our license. And if we are smart, we take advantage of every opportunity to learn about our industry outside of the requirements because we want to and not because we have to.

As consumers, you may think that selling real estate can't be that hard and that all of this training that we are required to take is to teach us how to sell real estate.  While it is true that there are a lot of continuing education courses available to help us be better at our jobs by improving our sales skills, the over-arching reason for all of this training it to learn about real estate law.

Real Estate Isn't Rocket Science

The attitude of the public is that selling real estate or being a real estate agent isn't rocket science and I would have to agree with the public on that.  But where we disagree is that agents must know real estate law in order to properly represent our clients.  Opening doors to properties is the easy part, but knowing what we can and cannot do or can or cannot say, is where it gets a little (actually a LOT) sticky and/or tricky.

While it may be true that you don't have to be a rocket science to become a real estate agent, you do have to care enough about your clients to protect their best interest.  You have to know real estate law in order to help your clients avoid the pitfalls of buying and selling real estate.  And more importantly, you have to educate your clients throughout the entire process.

You Don't Know What You Don't Know

No being a real estate agent is not rocket science, but as consumers, if you have not studied real estate law, it's guaranteed that

  1. you're treading on a slippery slope when you either try to buy or sell real estate on your own without the benefit of an agent OR
  2. You don't take advantage of your Realtors® vast knowledge about real estate law, the market, negotiating, strategies for best success based on our experience.

Charita- Real Estate isn't about driving around looking at houses.  You don't know what you don't know and that's where someone trying to go it alone can get into trouble.

It's not rocket science, but it's not digging a ditch, either! Far too many agents do the minimum to get by and it reflects poorly on the profession. For those that constantly seek improvement, they will soon set themselves apart from the masses!

That's my point exactly Ed and I take a lot of pride in that.  Sometimes the public just doesn't realize what is required of us behind the scenes.

And that's the truth Kathy.  Sometimes we agents hear a buyer say things like "I found the house myself" but finding the house is just the tip of the iceberg.

Nathan I agree particularly with those setting themselves apart by eagerly keeping up to date with education.
