Death and Property Taxes

These are the two things that are certain (ironically in life).  I was inspired to write this post after reading a post by Joan Cox. Although the premise is different, here is my take of our local property taxes and consumers should be aware of this.

I know in my area when it comes to a homes value, people tend to take the tax valuation info and use it whichever way suits the mood.  For example if a property were assessed at $150,00.  If the homeowners want to lower their tax bill, they will dispute the assessment saying that it's been overvalued.  If the homeowner wants to sell their home, they will dispute the assessment claiming that it is too low.

Real estate agents often make a point of stating in their listings remarks that market value is $XXX,XXX "according to tax records."  In my mind's eye, this is very deceptive and misleading because as real estate agents, we know that the tax assessed value has NOTHING to do with the property's actual value.

Consumers should know that tax assessment are designed for one purpose and one purpose only: to collect more money from the consumer.  PERIOD.  No ifs.  No ands and No buts about it.

If you want to know what your home is worth, have an appraisal performed, but dont' waste your time trusting the valuations provided by your tax assessors office.  You can check out your Jefferson County Alabama property tax in 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Watch out for the Taxman Cometh.
